My Biggest Blog Mistake And How I Fixed It.
You might have visions and goals. But so do everyone else.
James Clear said this best:
“Losers and winners have the same goals.”
I was a clear loser just not so long ago. I messed up pretty bad but at least some good came out of it (I will chalk it up as an experiment for now to make myself feel better).
I had a goal of writing 1 blog per week. It started out fine, I was able to keep up the writing for the first 7 weeks. 7 blogs were born.
However, right after the 7th blog, my school commitments at the time drastically increased to a point where I have absolutely no time and energy to continue writing.
What a load of horse shit I kept telling myself. I knew I had the time, what I lack however was energy.
I get absolutely drained from school activities and by the time I am home with some free time in my hands, all I wanted to do was to indulge in my usual vices of eating out and playing video games.
Ah. Missing a blog isn’t going to be the end of the world. I’ll let myself recharge this week and of course I will pick it back up on Monday.
12 Mondays has passed.
12.
3 months has gone by, and not a single new blog was written.
3 months of “I’ll do it next week”, costed me 12 new blogs, that’s enough volume for a book.
That’s enough “authority” and “street cred” to start making people feel like I know what I’m talking about.
That might’ve been enough content for me to start coming up with products and/or start selling services.
That’s 12 weeks of experience on writing skills that I flushed down the drain, all because I kept telling myself I deserve to take it easy.
Granted it’s not the end of the world, just sucks to know that I had the potential to be better than I am right now but I slipped.
Here I am after the fact, I sat down and seriously thought what the heck went wrong.
That’s when James Clear’s quote came out of nowhere and hit me.
“Losers and winners have the same goals.”
What’s important is the system that gets you to the goal, and quite frankly,
my system was a literal pile of hot garbage.
I relying on my will power, only am motivated at 2 in the morning when I’m already in bed.
By the time I get back home from the hospital (clinical rotations) I’m a deadbeat just playing video games.
Every night at 2 in the morning I would get oddly motivated and tell myself that tomorrow is the day, I will wake up at 5 am, I will do this and I will get that, (The usual BS etc).
Then fail miserably again and again.
Even back when I was “keeping up” with the blog writing, I was only relying on my willpower and the fuel of novelty. I was doing something new, it was exciting, it was easy to make time for it because I really wanted to create content.
But after months pass, when the novelty wears off, my “system” did not adapt.
I decided it was time for a change. I needed a better system. Luckily for me it didn’t take too long for me to realize what was wrong with my first go.
Old system:
Goal = 1 blog per week
System = writing sporadically whenever I have time and energy, sometimes I can write for hours. It takes me only two days (could be any day I choose) to finish 1 blog and I get 5 days off.
It was crap because if I get to choose whichever day I write, I will procrastinate for sure, and procrastinate I did. Plus the habit of writing would never be built this way.
New system:
Same goal, but I write for at least 30 minutes a day no matter what.
It’s only 30 minutes, I can do it . and If I finish more than 1 blog a week I can just schedule it (as of now, this is my 5th blog queued).
Consistently writing everyday also builds me a good habit.
Same goal, completely different outcomes because of the system implemented.
Another quick example is weight loss goals.
Your goal should be to adhere to a good system that leads to your desired outcome (i.e. diet and exercises plans you can follow consistently), and not just the number on the scale.
TRDL:
Have a system that works. Experiment for a while if you have to. Your goal should be to follow your system that will lead you to the desired outcome, instead of having the goal being the outcome itself.
Hope you’ve gain some new perspective today. The blog today is inspired by “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. Cheers.
